Happy New Year to Barbara Windsor. Made a Dame! I had the pleasure of meeting her when I photographed her at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama graduation ceremony at The Royal Festival Hall in London. She was being made an honorary fellow of Central. In her acceptance speech she mentioned that her favourite person, Kenneth Williams, would be laughing his head off at her, with love, at the idea of her being honoured. Imagine what he is thinking now at her being made a Dame?
She is not the tallest person in the world. I was positioned down at the front of the stage directly in line with the podium from which all the speeches were being made which was a good place to get the acceptance speech shots and cover the rest of the stage. I don’t like to move around much when I’m visible to 3500 people. They are there to watch their sons and daughters receive their degrees not be distracted by a photographer running around at the front. Nevertheless it became apparent that if I didn’t move to the side sharpish I wouldn’t be able to see her behind the podium. If I had been working for a newspaper I would have stayed and got the inevitable comedy shot of her semi hidden by the podium and then moved but my client, Central, would have absolutely no use or desire to use an image like that, now or in the future, so I ran straight to the side to get a shot of her that would show her off the best and with the respect that she deserves.
Congratulations on your Damehood Barbara.
