Sir Donald Sinden

I met Sir Donald Sinden twice on photographic jobs for my client The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. One of those jobs was photographing him as he gave a guided tour to RCSSD students round the Garrick Club in London’s West End. It was also being filmed for a documentary.
He entertained everybody present with a story for every painting on the wall of all the great and good of the acting world who had been or were members of the club. His time in the business covered an extraordinary period such that he knew people who one would perceive to be much too far back in history for anybody alive today to possibly have known. It was like being taken back in time.
A lot of the students that day were American and I’m sure some of them were a bit bewildered by this great raconteur. In truth some probably didn’t know who he was. This was not lost on Sir Donald who gently poked fun at them and America at every opportunity. He was every inch the dignified gentleman.
Ever since college my friends and I have used a running gag impersonation of Sir Donald Sinden so he was an inadvertent hero to me.
They say you should never meet your heroes because you will be disappointed. This was absolutely not the case here. I am so glad that I met him and got to enjoy his dry rapier wit first hand.
Rest in peace Sir Donald. I loved meeting you.
